What happens when you combine a joyful couple, centuries-old Greek traditions, and one of Williamsburg’s most beautiful wedding venues?

Absolute magic.

From the moment I photographed Eleni and Tyler’s engagement session at Keswick Vineyards near Charlottesville, I knew their wedding day would be unforgettable. Their love for one another was effortless. They laughed easily, cared deeply for each other, and had the kind of connection that makes photographing a couple feel incredibly natural.

Their wedding day was a beautiful reflection of who they are—elegant, deeply meaningful, and centered around family, faith, and tradition.

Getting Ready at The Maine of Williamsburg

The day began at The Maine of Williamsburg, where Eleni spent the morning getting ready alongside her closest friends and family before heading to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church for the ceremony.

One of my favorite parts of every wedding day is photographing the details before the excitement truly begins. The bridal suite at The Maine provided the perfect setting for Eleni’s heirloom-worthy details. Her gown hung beautifully against the suite’s stunning floor-to-ceiling gold-framed mirror while I carefully styled her invitation suite, delicate jewelry, shoes, and floral accents.

I especially loved the soft blush and sage color palette, which felt timeless and romantic. Even the wedding invitations, beautifully written in Greek, were a meaningful reminder of the traditions that would shape the rest of the day.

As hair and makeup wrapped up, the anticipation grew. Before getting dressed, Eleni shared a first look with her bridesmaids—a moment filled with excitement, happy tears, and the biggest smiles.

A First Look I’ll Never Forget

I’ve photographed countless first looks over the years.

Every single one is emotional.

But every so often, there’s one that stays with you.

We tucked Tyler beneath the shade of the trees outside The Maine while he waited to see his bride. When Eleni gently tapped his shoulder and he turned around, the emotion on his face said everything.

His first words?

“Baby, you’re so beautiful…you look amazing.”

It wasn’t rehearsed or dramatic.

It was genuine.

The two of them simply stood together, embracing, smiling, and quietly talking to one another while the rest of the world seemed to disappear. Those are the moments I love most—the ones that can’t be planned.

The Beauty of a Greek Orthodox Wedding Ceremony

From The Maine, everyone traveled to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Williamsburg.

Stepping inside the church is breathtaking. Rich iconography, soaring architecture, and warm candlelight create an atmosphere unlike any other wedding ceremony.

Before the ceremony officially began, Eleni participated in the Stolisma, a traditional dressing ceremony surrounded by family. As her loved ones helped prepare her for marriage, her sister played the piano while another family member accompanied the moment on guitar, singing traditional Stolisma songs that have been passed down through generations.

It was one of the most meaningful moments of the entire day.

Greek Orthodox wedding ceremonies are rich with symbolism and sacred tradition. Rather than focusing solely on vows, every element points toward the lifelong covenant of marriage. Knowing this helped me to photograph each part with intention.

The ceremony began with the Service of Betrothal, where the priest blessed the wedding rings before the Koumbaroi (wedding sponsor) exchanged them between the bride and groom three times, symbolizing that their lives are forever united.

During the Service of Crowning, Eleni and Tyler received the Stefana—beautiful wedding crowns joined together by a ribbon. The crowns symbolize the glory and honor bestowed upon husband and wife while also representing the selfless sacrifice that marriage requires. As the Koumbara exchanged the crowns three times, the symbolism of the Holy Trinity was beautifully woven throughout the ceremony.

They then shared the Common Cup, drinking from the same cup of wine as a reminder that they will experience both life’s joys and challenges together.

One of the most recognizable traditions was the Dance of Isaiah, where the priest led the bride, groom, and Koumbara around the ceremonial table three times. These were their first steps together as husband and wife, guided by their faith and surrounded by prayers for a long and blessed marriage.

As I photographed the ceremony, it was so special to realize how every tradition offered another opportunity to tell a deeper story—not just of the wedding day itself, but of generations of faith, heritage, and family.

Celebrating Back at The Maine

After the ceremony, everyone returned to The Maine of Williamsburg to celebrate.

The reception perfectly blended timeless elegance with joyful Greek celebration.

One of the highlights of the evening was Eleni and Tyler’s beautifully rehearsed first dance. They floated effortlessly across the dance floor, making it look completely natural while giving their guests an unforgettable performance.

Later came another beloved Greek tradition—the Money Dance—as family and friends surrounded the couple with love, laughter, and well wishes for their new life together.

And then…

The Greek dancing began.

If you’ve ever attended a Greek wedding, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

The dance floor stayed full all evening as guests linked arms, laughed together, and celebrated with an energy that was absolutely contagious. I may have spent the evening secretly wishing I knew all the steps myself.

Chasing Golden Hour at The Maine

As the reception was underway, we slipped away for one last portrait session during golden hour—and it was absolutely worth it.

The Maine of Williamsburg offers so many beautiful backdrops, and the evening light transformed each one into something truly magical. From the elegant fountain to the wooded paths surrounding the property and the timeless front entrance of the venue, every location was bathed in the soft, golden glow that photographers dream about.

These quiet moments away from the celebration are always some of my favorites. The timeline slows down, the excitement of the day begins to settle, and couples have a chance to simply be together as newlyweds. There’s no rush—just the two of them, soaking in the joy of the day while we create portraits that feel effortless, romantic, and timeless.

Some of my favorite images from Eleni and Tyler’s wedding were created during these few peaceful minutes together. The combination of beautiful light, an incredible venue, and a couple completely in love made for artwork they’ll treasure for generations.

It was a day rooted in faith, rich with family traditions, and overflowing with genuine joy from beginning to end.
