The REAL Elephant in the Room: AI and Your Wedding Photography

There’s an elephant in the room that seems to be getting bigger by the day.

AI.

With fall weddings just around the corner and artificial intelligence becoming increasingly woven into the creative world, I’ve had this topic on my mind quite a bit lately.

And as a wedding photographer, I think it’s a conversation worth having.

Because when you hire me to photograph your wedding, you’re not hiring me to create a prettier, more perfect version of your day.

You’re hiring me to photograph the one that actually happened.

I don’t like fake.

I don’t know about you, but I think there’s already far too much artificial in the world. (Hello, AI.)

In my personal life, what you see is what you get. I value honesty, genuine connection, and authenticity. I’m always going to be truthful with you, and I genuinely care about the people who invite me into such an important part of their lives.

That carries over into the way I photograph weddings.

Of course, I love beautiful things. I’m an artist, after all. Creating beautiful imagery from your wedding day is part of my job, and something I absolutely love.

But here’s the thing:

I believe the beauty is already there. I don’t need to manufacture it.

Recently, a bride asked me a question I hadn’t been asked before:

“Will you be using AI on my wedding images?”

And honestly, I thought it was a really good question.

With AI advancing so quickly, I completely understand why a couple might wonder what happens to their photographs after the wedding day. If you’re investing in photography to preserve one of the most meaningful days of your life, you deserve to know how your images are being created and edited.

So, let’s talk about it.

Where I draw the line

AI is a very broad topic, and the technology is evolving constantly. There’s also an important distinction between AI-assisted tools used for everyday photographic editing and using AI to fundamentally alter a person, place, or moment.

I hand-edit every wedding image in Adobe Lightroom. Like many creative programs today, Lightroom includes AI-assisted features that can help photographers make certain edits more efficiently.

And yes, I may use those tools in some very specific circumstances.

For example, if you wake up on your wedding day with a blemish that wasn’t there yesterday-

Yes, I’ll probably soften it.

If your fiancé happens to cut his forehead and needs three stitches right before the wedding-

Yes, I’ll help with that, too. (True story!)

Those are temporary things. They don’t change who you are or what actually happened.

But there is a line, and I believe that line matters.

I won’t manufacture your story.

I won’t use AI to manipulate you, your fiancé, your family, your wedding party, your venue, or the meaningful details of your wedding day into something they weren’t.

I won’t change someone’s body, hairstyle or outfit. I won’t turn real skin into something that looks plastic. I won’t add a different engagement ring or create flowers that weren’t there. I won’t change your wedding venue.

And I certainly won’t manufacture a moment that never happened.

Because that would be completely contrary to the way I believe your story should be told.

Your wedding is not a styled shoot or a movie set. It’s not something that needs to be digitally perfected until every little imperfection disappears.

It’s your wedding.

And that’s what I want to photograph.

The imperfect moments are part of the story.

The wind might move your veil or there might be a moment when your hair doesn’t cooperate. Someone might laugh at exactly the wrong moment during the ceremony or your flower girl might refuse to walk down the aisle.

Your champagne might spill unexpectedly, or you might cry harder than you expected. Your friends- or even YOU and your new spouse might dance like absolute fools on the dance floor. (Because why not?!)

And honestly?

I want those things.

Because those are the moments that make your wedding yours.

Years from now, I don’t want you looking at your photographs and wondering what was real.

I want you to see you. Your love, your people, your joy. Your perfectly imperfect, AMAZING wedding day.

And more than simply remembering how it looked, I want you to feel it all over again.

Your wedding is beautiful without AI.

I have a firm belief that your real, actual story is far more beautiful than anything I could ever pretend it to be.

That doesn’t mean I won’t make beautiful photographs. It’s actually quite the opposite.

I’ll use everything I’ve learned as a photographer and artist over the course of my career to create intentional, thoughtfully composed imagery that reflects the beauty of your day.

But I don’t want to create a version of your wedding that never existed.

I want to create art from what did, and that’s the difference.

And if you’re trusting me with your wedding photographs, I want you to know exactly where I stand.

Your wedding is beautiful without AI.

And I intend to photograph it that way.

I’d love to hear from you.

AI in photography is a conversation that isn’t going away anytime soon. If you’re a past, current, or future Joy Mills Photography couple, I’d genuinely love to know what you think.

Does AI in photography concern you? Do you have questions about how photographers are using it? Or do you see it differently?

Send me a message or leave a comment. I’d love to continue the conversation.

Because when it comes to your story, I think it’s worth talking about what is real.

Behind the Lens

MEET JOY

I only have ten photos from my wedding day. Ten moments frozen in faded 4x6 Fuji-film time, bound together in folding-folio, leatherette fashion... as if everything our story stood for could be contained in the four corners of just ten frames. If I'm being honest, we skimped when it came to a photographer. A last minute budget cut. A practical decision. Only, we had no idea how much it would cost us...
